That Sick Feeling

This isn’t going to be a very long post today. I am not feeling great. Hopefully, it’s not COVID but hey if it is then I guess I hope I make it. I don’t mean to make light of COVID. It’s been devastating to so many people. But this isn’t about the pandemic. It’s about us.

I find it amazing that your body can even FEEL sick. Think of it. Because illness takes place on a microscopic level, we can’t really see when we’re sick. It’s like getting an arrow through the hand where the injury and illness are obvious. It’s all invisible. And yet through the miracle of evolution, our bodies can tell us when we’ve been invaded.

To be clear, I’m not suggesting that we feel sick as some kind of a tool to let us know we’re sick. It’s the result of many processes within the body to combat infection. We feel sick because we’ve learned that when we feel a certain way (feverish, headaches, body pains, etc.) it means we are getting sick — not the other way around. But I still find it impressive.

It’s easy to see why so many people would believe in intelligent design. Things work so beautifully together. There is a harmony that exists throughout so much of the world that it seems intentional. And it is. It just wasn’t some man in the sky designing it. It’s the result of billions of years of trial and error, evolution. I think that’s pretty cool and far more impressive than some god making everything.

It’s important, I think, for people to remember that evolution is really our master. We will survive as a species only for as long as the environment around us allows us to. It’s easy to think we can solve any problem that comes up. That simply isn’t reality. If we change and alter the world around us we might someday find ourselves near extinction. And that would be a bummer.

For now, though, I will just appreciate my body and the wonders it contains. Oh, and I’ll drink lots of fluids and go to bed early tonight.
